The child of soul R&B, dancehall, and Hip-Hop, Whitney grew up in a world of diverse sounds.
Hit that play button to deep dive into the music! You might have just found your newest playlist addition!
Silky and sticky vocals direct with breathy harmonies and multiple layers of delicacy on Whitney Nechelle’s uniquely winding, self-aware new sultry & soulful single Speak.
The clatter of the beat and the conflicting tap build a vastly attainable pop-like mood from the start, with a quite nostalgic vibe. Weave in these deep verses, passionately and cleanly blended, and things will gradually but steadily shift towards totally fresh realms.
Speak introduces the skillfully meandering vocal harmonies of Whitney Nechelle in a way that feels acquainted yet also indicative of an artist ready to pave their own way, with a likable beat that injects a level of weight and easily recognizable styling into the track.
Beautifully crafted, with a longer-form melody than most pop songs, fusing that RnB meander with a more comforting soulful structure for something that essentially delivers the best of both worlds.
Modern Soulful Music Awards: What made you decide to jump into the music industry or music business?
Whitney Nechelle (WN:) I have been dancing, singing, and performing in front of crowds since I was 3 years old. My father was a DJ in his younger years and my mother performed on Broadway and also was an assistant 2 entertainers in the business… So I wouldn’t say when did I decide to jump into music; I would more so say I was born into music and it has always been a part of my life. I always make jokes saying that I think I learned how to dance before I could walk! *smiles
What do you think makes you stand out from all the other aspiring and upcoming artists in your genre of music?
WN: Outside of my unique voice as I’ve been told *laughs … I would have to say the lyrics. I focus a lot on small details. I want to make sure my audience understands what I’m saying but it still sounds and feels good!
If you could collaborate with ANY artist/band… Who would you choose and why?
WN: I would really love to make a song with Doja Cat and Janet Jackson! I love the soft voices of both girls but I also feel that when they make music it is going to be feel-good music. Music that I couldn’t go wrong if I spent my money per se. I love to watch both of them perform! I am a visually stimulated being *laughs
What do you think is your biggest Advantage and your biggest Disadvantage of being an Indie artist?
WN: I think the biggest advantage is having the ability to reach your audience and show them what you really like and what you do not like. You’re not just putting out music and visuals that you have been told must represent you. You can pick and choose what you want to represent your brand…One of the biggest disadvantages I believe is having the responsibility of financially overseeing your entire album project. Even for distribution, it is very difficult to reach a fan base without having hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Do you prefer the Independent route or would you rather sign to a major record label, and why?
WN: I think there are true advantages and disadvantages on both sides. I love the freedom that I have been an independent artist, however, with the right opportunity I would not turn it down. I would just make sure that I read my contracts and was not pressured into a deal that was not financially sound.
Out of all the songs you’ve released, what do you think is your best song and why?
There are a few songs that are my favorite, but I must say…I think that it is a problem that I want to have. On my album, Capricorn, it is the hardest question to answer because depending on what mood I’m in my favorite song changes. You know I like to watch movies based on the actors that are in them. Like if I see Viola Davis is in for the movie then I know it’s going to be a great movie! That’s what I want my fans to feel…if my name is on it then it’s got to be a great album!
Between creating in the studio OR performing live on stage, which is your most enjoyable one and why?
WN: I love performing in the studio but nothing satisfies me when it comes to performing. As I stated I’ve been performing since I was a little girl. I also feel that performing allows people to physically connect with my fans and not just over a computer screen or a speaker. I still feel that nothing beats the connection to your fans rather than seeing them face to face and allowing to touch their souls!
What would you consider the most successful or proudest moment in your music career, so far?
WN: So far I would say releasing and performing my first album. It felt so good to have songs that allowed people to understand who and what I am.
What inspires you the most about the music industry these days?
I love the fact that anybody can be noticed and that you do not need a huge record label to push your music and get it out there. Social media has allowed anybody to get their music out to the world.
If you weren’t in the music business or industry, what do you think you would be doing with your life instead?
WN: I love babies and animals so if I was not doing music I would either be school teaching the youngsters out here in the world or I would be working with animals hands-on.
