Pam draws inspiration from various sources, finding beauty in nature, music, pets, and people. Her role models include the legendary Octavia Butler, whose manifestation list has recently inspired Pam, and the talented Ari Lennox, whose voice and aura have left a lasting impact. Additionally, Pam finds daily inspiration from her husband, Mico Davis, who supports her with wisdom, care, and a calming presence.
What story/emotional narrative does your music tell?:
“Road Trip was written as a sort of “freedom anthem” from a very specific time in my life. I wrote it in 2016, a few months after I settled into my new home after experiencing homelessness, divorce, and career changes for three years. I was still finding who I was after losing so much. Many of the titles that I tied my identity to at that time were gone, and I felt like a toddler trying to navigate the world. Everything was new, everything was loud, and I was trying to figure out how to be a human in all the newness.
I was in my room one night in November 2016, and I started hearing this melody and humming the lyrics, “Take a breath, take a step, open up to the view. Take the leap, remember to breathe, don’t close your eyes…” I sent a voice note to my now husband, Mico Davis (who produced this track). I sent him the musical idea, and the rest was history. Seven years later, and these lyrics still call to me. They encourage me to try new things, to breathe fresh air, and to become all of myself. I hope listeners will see some of themselves in this song, and love it too.”
How does your music bring inspiration to the soul?:
“My music is often tender, but powerful. I think that’s who I am, truly. I am a person who cares deeply for the world, while also inspiring & encouraging people to step into their power. This is a lesson I often teach myself, too.
Also, this song in particularly unique to me for it’s blend of R&B, Country, Soul, & Americana/Acoustic vibes. It really is a testament to Black contributions to foundations of these genres, and is so timely given that it was released on June 30th, the last day of African American Music Appreciation Month.”
Who inspires you? Who are your role models? :
“I see inspiration everywhere! Truly. In the air, in the trees, in music, in pets, in people. I feel inspired when I see someone living their truth, and living it well. Octavia Butler’s manifestation list has been inspiring me lately. So has Ari Lennox’s voice & general aura. My husband inspires me, daily, with his wisdom, care, and calm. I feel very fortunate to be inspired, often.”
Why do you want to be an award-winning Modern Soulful Musician?:
“Winning the Modern Soulful Musician Award has been a dream of mine since 2021. I love the way you all talk about & celebrate music, especially from indie artists. I have been working on my craft to grow, get better, and be worthy of being on your list. I hope you love my new song as much as I do!”
