It can truly happen to anyone, and you just never know when you or someone you love may be affected by it. Everyone deserves empathy and understanding – I also want to show through my music how you can move on and gain strength from your experiences as well. I wouldn’t take back the things I went through because it really built me into who I am today and even though it was extremely hard, I am grateful for the lessons I learned.”

“I have always been most inspired by my two older siblings – they taught me so much growing up, and were really my guiding light in terms of morals, hard work, and how to navigate the world with integrity. They have accomplished so much and I am insanely proud of them. They are a huge part of who I am today and I am thankful for always having them in my life.”

“I want to be an award-winning Modern Soulful Musician because I have loved music all my life. It was the first thing that really made me feel like myself – singing came naturally to me, and it was something I could always do to feel more grounded and connected to the world around me. Oftentimes growing up, listening to music and singing was something I did alone in my room – it helped me express myself and explore complicated feelings that I didn’t know how to process yet.

I always knew in my heart I wanted to be a singer, but things didn’t really work out that way for me for different reasons. Nonetheless, I never gave up on it and something always called me back. And even though I’m making music again, it still isn’t easy! It brought up complicated feelings for me, but at this point I’m just making music for myself and nobody else – if people end up loving it then that’s a bonus. I just want to do things my way this time, without the toxicity of the music industry holding me back. “Road Trip was written as a sort of “freedom anthem” from a very specific time in my life. I wrote it in 2016, a few months after I settled into my new home after experiencing homelessness, divorce, and career changes for three years. I was still finding who I was after losing so much. Many of the titles that I tied my identity to at that time were gone, and I felt like a toddler trying to navigate the world. Everything was new, everything was loud, and I was trying to figure out how to be a human in all the newness.

I was in my room one night in November 2016, and I started hearing this melody and humming the lyrics, “Take a breath, take a step, open up to the view. Take the leap, remember to breathe, don’t close your eyes…” I sent a voice note to my now husband, Mico Davis (who produced this track). I sent him the musical idea, and the rest was history. Seven years later, and these lyrics still call to me. They encourage me to try new things, to breathe fresh air, and to become all of myself. I hope listeners will see some of themselves in this song, and love it too.”

How does your music bring inspiration to the soul?:
“My music is often tender, but powerful. I think that’s who I am, truly. I am a person who cares deeply for the world, while also inspiring & encouraging people to step into their power. This is a lesson I often teach myself, too.

Also, this song in particularly unique to me for it’s blend of R&B, Country, Soul, & Americana/Acoustic vibes. It really is a testament to Black contributions to foundations of these genres, and is so timely given that it was released on June 30th, the last day of African American Music Appreciation Month.”

“I see inspiration everywhere! Truly. In the air, in the trees, in music, in pets, in people. I feel inspired when I see someone living their truth, and living it well. Octavia Butler’s manifestation list has been inspiring me lately. So has Ari Lennox’s voice & general aura. My husband inspires me, daily, with his wisdom, care, and calm. I feel very fortunate to be inspired, often.”

We have great strength and power, even if sometimes we forget it.
I happened to lose everything. After the initial despair, I got back up; in my songs there’s the journey I took to let go of guilt and feeling inadequate and to really find myself, and that’s the only value no one can take away from you while you’re alive.
The song “The Best I Can” is about a significant loss and how, despite a pain that seems endless, “I’ll do the best I can” to live fully and not waste a single moment; I’ll strive and challenge myself to better myself every day; I’ll fight not to remain in the role of the victim, at the mercy of events; I’ll do my best to keep singing.”

“I think my music can bring inspiration because it comes from real life, from facing fears, overcoming issues, growing.
Though in different ways, we all face the same challenges in the end. If I was able to make it and sing about it, anyone can!”

“For starters, “Ms. Takes (feat. Why do you want to be an award-winning Modern Soulful Musician?:
“I’ve been making and producing music for a long time and I jut would love to get the recognition I deserve. When you guys reviewed my track “Ms. Takes” and spoke so highly of it, I just wanted to try my luck at winning an award with. I’ve been making soulful music in hip hop for so long and I just want to be properly recognized for it.”
