Zimbabwean singer, FRYA (pronounced Fre-ya) is ready to share her new hit single ‘Changes’, which accompanies the release of her debut album ‘Balance’.

Artist Bio

Frya is one of the most versatile artists to come out of Africa in recent years. The 26-year-old Zimbabwean singer-songwriter has crafted her genre-bending sound through her nomadic lifestyle. This diverse, pan-African soundscape is reflected in her debut album, Balance.
Having fallen in love with music at a young age, her father travelled quite often seeing Frya spend majority of her childhood in Europe and Sudan. In 2017 she moved to South Africa. “My mother was the happiest when she sang in the house before she passed” she mentions as her biggest inspiration followed by other greats like Amy Winehouse, Nina Simon, Adele, Rihanna and Jhene Aiko. The name FRYA comes from reading a lot of books about Norse Mythology as a child. The Goddess Freya stood out as she loved music, fought for what she loved, was called in on matters of love and when she cried her tears turned to gold. When choosing a name she needed one that represented the woman she had become which is heard through her music tackling love, bold expressions of sexuality, resilience and free expression.

“Changes” sheds new light on the artist, striking a chord with spectators because of its transparency, fragility, purity, and the powerful artistic thread that runs through the work.

As a result of the overall mood shift of her melodic vocals, the audience’s spirits are lifted as a result. The lyrics of the song tell the story of vulnerability, loyalty, and asking the same of the other person. Towards the end of the song, the guitar solo touches on the influences of Prince. The solo is played over background vocals with a key change that elevates the mood and intensity of the song and overall cinematic feeling. In the end, it’s up to the listener to decide if things work out as the song ends with a fiery solo over the lingering background vocals asking a question of the muse.

Aside from being an artist, I am an ICU Nurse. One night, I was speaking with patient of mine. I had to break the news that he had cancer and was likely going to die soon. We talked for a while about his life, and I left in contemplation of my own. Then I wrote this song.

Thank you to all the inspiring & soulful submissions to the 1st Modern Soulful Music Awards. There were so many amazing entries, and it was an extremely difficult task to find the winners for this year!

We have listened to and reviewed THOUSANDS of submissions, yet we have found some songs that were exceptionally well written, performed, and/ or produced to merit an award as one of our TOP RECIPIENTS in our competition for 2021-2022.

Now, the final decisions are announced for the Modern Soulful Music Awards. In a year like this, to have so many artists, musicians, producers and songwriters step forward is an inspiration to all. There were so many good songs that didn’t make this list. And we are ever aware of the dark side of ranking one thing over another. Browse this group of songs and you will discover two things. First, there is a universe of songwriters out there worth discovering. Second, you could also make and submit a song like this with enough time and care.
